Ever since I started my career, I tried not to let people know too much about my personal life. I wasn’t born rich, and I don’t want to draw attention to myself. People already pay close attention to Apple and I think we should focus on our products and the great things customers get out of them.

At the same time, I believe what Dr. Martin Luther King said: “The most important question about life is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ ” I often ask myself that question, and now I know, my strong desire for keeping my personal life has stopped me from doing more important things for others. That’s why I"m sharing my secret with you today.

For years, I’m not afraid of telling people that I love man more than woman. Plenty of colleagues at Apple know I’m gay, and I don’t see any difference in the way they treat me. Of course, I’m very lucky to work at a great company. This company loves to make something new and and knows that the only way to make new things successful is that you never say no to people’s differences. Not everyone is so lucky.

While I have never said I’m not a gay, I haven’t said I’m a gay to the public either, until now. So let me be clear: I’m proud to be gay, and I believe being gay is one of the greatest gifts God has given me.

As a gay, I understand better about other gays. As a gay, I start to understand other people who are in a smaller group. I start to understand what they’re facing every day. It’s made me a nicer man. It made me live a richer life. It’s been tough and uncomfor at times, but it has given me the confidence to be myself, to follow my own way, and to fight against all kinds difficulties. It’s also made me stronger. It’s very useful when you’re the CEO of Apple.

The world has changed so much since I was a kid. America is giving people more freedom on marriage. More and more famous people are brave to come out. This has changed people’s mind and made people able to accept what other people say or do even if they don’t agree with it. Laws in some states still allow employers to fire people only because they’re gay. In many places, house owners can kick you out only because you are gay. You’re not allowed to visit sick partners and share the money or things when they die. A lot of people, especially kids, are living in fear and treated badly every day only because they are gay.

I don’t think I’m an activist, but I know I’ve benefited a lot from what others did. So if someone starts feeling better with who she or he is, someone doesn’t feel alone anymore, someone is brave enough to ask for the same rights after you hear my story, then it’s not a big deal to share some of my secrets with you.

I have to say this wasn’t easy. Privacy is important to me, and I’d like to keep some of it to myself. Apple is my life’s work. I’ll spend almost all the time on work as long as I’m awake. I just want to be the best CEO I can be. I think that’s what people need me to do,our employees, our customers, developers, shareholders, and supplier partners. Our society is getting better. People don’t judge each other just by their sex, their colors, and who they love. I’m an engineer, an uncle, a nature lover, a fitness nut, a son of the South, a sports fanatic, and many other things. I hope that people will see all these things, because they’re the things that I’m good at, they’re the things that makes me happy.

My company did a lot for human rights. We support people who want the same rights at work. We support people who want the same rights in marriage. We said no when they’re trying to make a law rule which is unfair to the gay. We’ll continue to do the right thing, and I believe that any CEO of this company would do the same thing. And I will continue to fight for the same rights for all people until I’m dead.

When I arrive in my office each morning, I see the photos of Dr. King and Robert F. Kennedy. I’m not writing this to pretend I’m one of them. I’m just doing my part, however small, to help others. We’re in a group. I’m happy to be part of it.
