Forbes

(Diggity Marketing)

(Wholesale Suite)

(Killer Visual Strategies)

(Experience Expositions)

(One Park Financial)

(Samuel Thimothy), OneIMS

(Global Good Fund)

(Cody Candee), Bounce

(Anthony Russo),#bethechange

(Joe"s Datacenter, LLC)

How To Incorporate Philanthropy Into Your Company Culture

Forbes

Aug 11, 2020

You don"t have to be a philanthropy-focused business to help your community. Even profit-based companies can give back to their communities in a significant way if they start incorporating philanthropy into their company culture or develop a community-focused approach to business operations.

Company culture shapes how employees view the business and interact with each other. By promoting philanthropy, a business seeks to leverage its employees" knowledge and experience in a unique way that will build the business"s reputation and do good within the community.

Below, ten experts from Young Entrepreneur Council share some of the techniques they use to build philanthropy into their company culture and why this matters.

1. Focus On Building A Community

When I put down roots in Chiang Mai, Thailand, several years ago, I found there were many like-minded digital marketing entrepreneurs who also chose to make the city their home base. But aside from occasionally running into them in co-working spaces or coffee shops, there was little sense of community. That"s where the idea for Chiang Mai SEO Conference (CMSEO) was born. It started small, with under 50 entrepreneurs gathering to connect and share knowledge. A few short years later, CMSEO is a sold-out event with just under 1,000 visitors in 2019. CMSEO isn"t a charitable event, but I don"t organize it to make money. It"s about building a community of like-minded entrepreneurs to expand their networks and share their knowledge. This sharing spirit now permeates every aspect of my company culture. - Matt Diggity, Diggity Marketing

2. Have A Knowledge-Sharing Mindset

One of our core values is that it"s a privilege to be able to pass on knowledge. We extend that to mean that we should be generous with our time when it comes to helping our customers, going beyond what the normal boundaries of customer support for our products would entail. We often get letters from our customers saying it"s the best customer service they"ve ever received and that we went out of our way to help with a non-related issue. We know that although this is not something specifically classed as philanthropic, we could easily be saying "no" in many of these situations, but donating that little bit of extra time benefits everyone involved. Culturally, having this mindset sets us apart when many other companies are doing the exact opposite in their efforts to optimize. - Josh Kohlbach,Wholesale Suite

3. Donate Your Services To Nonprofits In Need

Donate your services or products to nonprofits in need. We"ve donated over $5 million in services to nonprofits around the globe. We understand that not all nonprofits have big agency budgets and this can often impede their abilities to engage audiences and grow a loyal following. And in a world where misinformation spreads like wildfire, nonprofits need to move even faster when delivering educational content that can impact and inspire positive change. Because of this, we believe it"s imperative that our services remain affordable and approachable for the nonprofits that are working hard to drive social good. When you believe in what you do, often giving that service to a nonprofit can be the greatest gift! - Amy Balliett, Killer Visual Strategies

4. Identify Shortcomings You Can Address

One way to accomplish philanthropic goals within your community is to identify shortcomings that you can easily add value to through your business processes. For example, because I am the producer of The Yoga Expo, we offer free yoga classes to at-risk youths. It is simple to accomplish because it is just an extension of our daily business practice. As an added benefit, this has a positive impact on our business by showcasing our business to people who would not normally be exposed to what we do. - Kyle Michaud, Experience Expositions

5. Set The Tone From The Top

As a leader, it’s important to set the tone for the company and bring your personal endeavors into your company’s philanthropy efforts. I am my company’s founder and CEO and I also am a board member at our local hospital, Nicklaus Children"s Hospital, as well as a part of the Orange Bowl committee. Each year our organization’s leaders encourage and push our team to be a part of donating back to these organizations through events like toy drives and 5k runs. Company culture is about creating a sense of community in the workplace, but it’s equally important to create that sense of community outside the workplace. Our company culture is heavily centered around exceeding goals—personal and professional. By participating in philanthropy events, we’re encouraging our team to live by our company culture message. - John Lie-Nielsen, One Park Financial

6. Offer Internships To Locals

I will say it"s the internship. Cash donations to the local community or a cause dear to you are good, but offering local internships is a unique way of helping people. What better way to effect permanent change than to help people help themselves? Put a lot of thought into the value of the skills these interns would get when working with your company.Go beyond good work ethic and testimonials. What department in your company utilizes skills the general market needs? Some of these interns could go on to find jobs in other companies or industries, and some will end up working for your company. This will reflect in your work culture as you"ve started on a good note with potential staff. - Samuel Thimothy, OneIMS

7. Work Toward The Greater Good

At The Global Good Fund, we work with companies that have impact as part of their mission. I believe that every business can and should embrace a commitment to social good—that is how we will collectively solve the world’s most intractable problems. Impact has ripple effects. When employees know that their company is working toward the greater good, they have pride in their work and this pride becomes part of the culture. Ultimately, that is good for business. - Carrie Rich, The Global Good Fund

8. Give Back For Every Dollar You Earn

At Bounce, for every dollar we earn, nearly 50% goes directly to local shops who partner with us for holding luggage and bags. This is not philanthropic—it"s just our business model. It"s so easy to forget how much our business can impact our local communities. Sometimes we are even helping prevent mom-and-pop stores from going out of business. Emphasizing the good that our company does to the communities we operate in can really fire up the team about the work that we do, which leads to a virtuous cycle where we work harder and end up helping our partners even further, fueling our motivation all the more. It is so easy to forget how what we do has an impact on the community, and constantly reminding our team of this is a huge opportunity. - Cody Candee, Bounce

9. Organize Team Opportunities For Charity Work

Organize team opportunities to work with charities and local events. Not only does this allow your team to feel as though they are apart of something together, but it also shows that you do more than donate to a cause. Also, accept suggestions from your staff on charities they may have a connection with. Let them feel as though they are part of the decision-making process. And don"t make this a one-time thing, make it a day your company looks forward to each month or quarter. I think the benefits to this kind of teamwork are obvious in terms of benefit to the community surrounding the company. Plus, always encourage the team to take pictures and post them on social media. It"snot for vanity, or “look what we did," but good deeds are contagious.Spread positivity! - Anthony Russo, #bethechange

10. Leverage Your Company’s Unique Skills

Identifying ways to help philanthropic organizations using the services that your company offers can be the most rewarding thing. For example, when the shelter-in-place orders were put out in response to Covid-19, our web development services became extremely important to those businesses and restaurants having to close their storefront doors. By developing a Small Business Recovery Plan and building over 15 websites for free, our employees were able to use their time to give back and help those businesses keep revenue coming in. Looking for opportunities where you can use your talents and skills to help your community and send a lasting message to others about the culture of your company. - Joe Morgan, Joe"s Datacenter, LLC
