With the increase in the general standard of living, some ordinary Chinese families begin to afford a car. Yet opinions of the development of a private car vary from person to person.
Some claim that there are many advantages in possessing a car. It gives a much greater degree of comfort and mobility. The owner of a car is no longer forced to rely on public transport, and buses or taxies. With a car he can go where he likes and when he wants, so much so that he can enjoy his leisure to the full by making trips to the country or seaside on the weekends, instead of being confined to his immediate neighborhood.
However, others strongly object to developing private cars. They maintain that as more and more cars are produced and run in the street, a large volume of poisonous gas will be given off, polluting the atmosphere and causing actual harm to the health of people. In fact, private cars contribute to traffic congestion so greatly that advantages gained in comfort and freedom are often cancelled out by the frustration caused by traffic jams.
Whether private cars should be developed in China is a difficult question to answer. Yet the desire for the comfort and independence a private car can bring won"t be eliminated.

Let Kids Walk to the School
These days, inNanjingcity, taking a taxi to school is getting more and more fashionable amongmiddle-school students. Some of them are children of businessmen who arerelatively well-off. The parents of these children claim they can earn muchmoney easily and the yearly taxi fees spent by children mean nothing to them. But most parents must work very hard---some even have to find a second job toafford their children’s high consumption.
Parents’ love for their children is natural andunderstandable. They are not willing to let their children take the crowdedbuses and endure hardships of a long time bump. But this practice seems to domore harm than good to these kids. It is not simply a question of taking a taxi,it involves the parents’ education of their children in terms of charactercultivating and physical training in the making of a man. In my opinion, nomatter how wealthy a family is, they should not spoil their children in theprocess of personality development. Instead, they should do something to tempertheir children to endure hardship and torture of life and get self-dependent.They should let their children bear in mind that money does not come easily andanything cannot be achieved without sweat and tears. So they should not takeeverything for granted.
Our younger generations should have a comprehensivedevelopment, intellectually, physically and ethically. At present, it issurprising that moral education and character training for children are oftenignored. Let’s remember what Helen Keller, a blindUSwriter, says, “Character cannotbe developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and sufferingcan the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and successachieved.”
Whether the plane should be cheap
Air travel, once a privilege of the wealthy, hasbeen gaining popularity worldwide over the last few decades. Thenumber of people traveling by air has been growing by leaps andbounds. Some environmentalists, however, propose that air travel belimited, on the ground that it may give rise to a series ofproblems, including pollution and exhaustion of the world’svaluable energy resources. To my mind, it does not make much senseto restrict air travel. The most important and obvious reason is that no other vehicle cantravel as fast as an airplane. In other words, air travel may bethe only and easiest option when it comes to long-distance trips. For example, if a student from China wishes to go to the UnitedStates for further studies, the only means of transportation thatcould send him to the destination is undoubtedly the plane. Also, for people traveling on a regular basis, such as those engaged intransnational business, air travel would mean less time on theroad. This will certainly enable them to better prepare for theirfuture tasks, such as business negotiations, both mentally andphysically. In addition, air travel offers the comfort that cannot be foundelsewhere.
Most people, who have the experience of traveling byair, are bound to miss the snacks and drinks served on board, aswell as the smiles on the faces of flight attendants. In somecases, you could even enjoy a favorite movie while on a plane, completely unaware that you are hundreds of thousands of feet aboveground. Last but not least, it is important to bear in mind that air travelis simply a personal choice and should be respected. This clearlymeans that any attempt to restrict air travel would be seen as aviolation of human rights and is both groundless andunjustified. In summary, despite the various problems arising from air travel,it should not be limited or eliminated. What we should do is togive full play to the function of air travel, by maximizing itsbenefits while trying to come up with practical solutions to theexisting problems, such as developing fuel-efficient airplanes andalternative energy resources.
Bikes and Cars
I like going to school by like, because I think I can keep healthy by riding. Bicycles are still popular in Beijing. Some foreigners buy bicycles to ride. But more and more people buy cars because they think they are faster than bicycles. In fact the exhaust gas from cars makes the air dirty and they waste energy.I think bicycles are better than cars.

A Traffic Accident
Yesterday when I was walking along the street, I saw an old lady in front of me. She wanted to cross the street. All of a sudden, a bicycle ran against her at a high speed. The old woman fell to the ground. The cyclist was very frightened and ran away. I hurried to help the lady up, called a taxi and sent her to the nearest hospital. Luckily she was not badly hurt.
We live in a large city which is like a big family. We should care for each other.
