我个人觉得，从“创新（innovation）”本意来讲，不论在什么地方，创造一种以前（世界范围内）未出现的新东西（新产品）或新服务，是无所谓自主的或不自主的。所以，independent innovation中independent是多余的（难道还有dependent innovation？）。
另外，indigenous innovation已经有人作了别的定义，个人认为也不适合来译当前环境下国内提倡的“自主创新”涵义（某些国家逼迫我们自力更生和创新）。

其它的词，比如autonomous innovation和self-innovation也都有各自的涵义，也不能用。
我觉得印度人使用的“self-reliance and innovation”倒是十分适合当前环境下“自主创新”的涵义。“自主创新”不妨解释性地译为self-reliance and innovation。
